What You Should Notice
New Tech Solutions is the quiet giant. $1.6B across 13,779 awards. Averages ~$115K per award. Not flashy, not on Washington Technology's front page, but #1 by a wide margin. Their game is IT product resale with 8(a) margin.
Alaska Native Corporations punch above their weight. CCI Utility, Arcticom, and several other Alaska-based 8(a) firms are on the list. ANCs are structured differently from standard 8(a) firms — no size cap on sole-source awards, no cap on number of subsidiaries. This is why they win big.
Tribal 8(a) firms also dominate specific niches. Cherokee Nation Management & Consulting won 66 awards for $255M — averaging $3.9M each. Tribally-owned firms (similar to ANCs) have similar structural advantages.
Virginia and DC dominate the list. 7 of the top 20 are HQ'd in VA or DC. Physical proximity to federal buyers still matters.
If You're Pursuing 8(a) Certification
Before applying for 8(a) status, understand what the program actually is: a 9-year development program with graduated restrictions. You get sole-source eligibility (up to $4.5M for services, $7.5M for manufacturing) and set-aside competition access, but you also face increased reporting and eventually graduate out.
The firms winning biggest on this list either (a) are ANCs/tribal 8(a) firms with structural exemptions, (b) have built specialist relationships in narrow NAICS codes, or (c) operate at transaction-volume scale (New Tech Solutions) where margin per-transaction matters less.
If you do not fit one of those three patterns, 8(a) alone will not make you competitive with the names on this list.
